What is Composition and Layout?

Layout and composition are the building blocks of graphic design. A strong composition will attract attention, clarify understanding, and engage the viewer. Composition is the part where all the separate elements come together to form a whole; when all of your type, your images, graphics and colours, come together to form one cohesive design.

Why is this important?

A successful composition means that you have arranged, distributed, aligned and compiled your design in a way that not only looks good but is also highly functional and effective. Layout design refers to the arrangement of visual elements within a grid in order to convey a particular message. The latter part of this definition is key. If a layout doesn't read well to the viewer, the design is ineffective, no matter how trendy it looks.

Grids are useful in layout design because they help structure and organize content. Although grids are invisible in the user-facing design, it’s easy to tell at a glance whether a layout follows a grid system.

When is this used?

You will incorporate principles of composition and layout anytime you are creating a final output(poster, report, pamphlet, booklet, newsletter, website or presentation) from information and visuals. When developing a layout design include the target audience, the objective of the design, and the theme of the content. When layout is not given appropriate thought, the message can be muddled and unclear and you run the risk of losing your audience through miscommunication

How do you execute it?

Flow: Guiding the eye

Layout design is a crucial foundation in graphic design. You can create a visually appealing message that will communicate with your audience effectively. Using grids, balance, hierarchy, grouping, and white space to create your layout will help you develop great layout designs while avoiding some of the most common graphic design mistakes.
